Unless otherwise stated, all of the
following events occurred in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
Georgia smiled at Russell in the corridor
of an old converted hunting lodge with a huge stainless steel kitchen as
they were moving in. Russell looked straight past Georgia, but it wasn't
his fault… he is socially retarded. Nevertheless, she still holds it against
him. Every day they would share a car to college where they would see Sarah.
They didn't actually speak to her for another two years. She was unapproachably
friendly. Sarah wrote and performed pretty songs on a blue acoustic guitar.
Russell loved songs platonically, from a distance. Georgia loved boys,
less platonically, at quite close range. In the summer of 2003, Russell
asked Sarah if she'd consider playing the drums in a new band with him.
She said she couldn't play the drums. He said "how hard can it be?" By
this time Georgia and Russell had the kind of relationship that had surpassed
politeness and consideration. Russell informed Georgia she would be the
bass player in this new band. They thought 'The Research' sounded like
a fashionable name. By the time they realised they needed an 's' on the
end it was too late.
The first step was to get some instruments. Russell found a keyboard for £9 in Cash Converters and an 'EZ Organ' book with chord diagrams. Initially, the drum kit and bass guitar were borrowed from friends. They couldn't believe how easy it was to make music. When they had three songs to their name, a girl called Lucy asked them to play a charity event at the local Salvation Army hall where they had to plug the bass into the speaker cabinet on the organ. After that they played at a swanky wine bar in the centre of Wakefield where they met three funny brothers called 'The Cribs'. They recorded a demo tape with a Scotsman who lived and worked in a haunted tower called Green Mount Villas. There were six songs on it and they were really proud of all of them. Some other people liked them too. Sarah went to America to get away from Georgia and Russell, but while she was gone, they had lots of conversations with record companies. Most of them hadn't even heard The Research. Russell couldn't believe that A&R people sit in their offices in London and phone promoters in Wakefield to find out whether a band was any good, so he charged them all £2 for demo tapes. He never cashed the cheque from Sony because it looked so funny.
Sarah returned to England 5 months later to find that Russell had extended his name to Russell (THE DISASTER) and Georgia had got a new haircut and a new boyfriend. They played a gig on the night she returned and fell in love all over again. A lovely guy called Whiskas booked them loads of brilliant gigs in Leeds. The Research saved up £60 and bought a bass guitar. Then, when they could afford it they bought a snare drum. The bass drum and the hi-hats are still borrowed. They can fit all their equipment in the back of a Ford Escort Estate along with themselves and one extra passenger at the same time.
THE RESEARCH are a fantastic band from Wakefield (UK), I saw them live on their unique visit to Spain, in the Faraday Festival, near Barcelona, and we loved them... Here are some questions we asked them, and Russell answered us...

1. Who writes the songs? Where do you
find the inspiration to write those beautiful songs?
I (Russell) write songs when i am
alone and then i sing them to Georgia and Sarah and, if they like them,
they play some music along with me.
2. Which bands influence the sound of
THE RESEARCH?
THE CRIBS.
3. Is there a musical scene in Wakefield?
any ther interesting bands from Wakefield that we should know?
The children of Wakefield grew up
to form excellent bands like THE CRIBS, PISKIE SITS, THE OLD HOUSE and
LAST GANG. We are friends with them.
4. Do any of you come from other bands
or have played in other bands in the past or today?
We have all been known to guest on
recordings and at rare concerts by some of the local bands listed above.
Also, Georgia has a very controversial side-project that we are not allowed
to speak of for legal reasons regarding it's explicitness.
5. As almost no-one lives on music nowadays,
what do you do in a normal day?
Wakefield is a very cheap town to
live in so we live like kings here solely from the income of our CD sales.

6. ...And what are your hobbies?
Russell: skateboarding and swimming
the backstroke.
Georgia: interacting with European
men on the internet.
Sarah: scratching things, like a cat.
7. How did you get in touch with "At Large
Recordings"?
I think our managers got in touch
with them on the telephone.
8. Would you have preferred an indie label
instead of a major?
No no no. We are major-happy with
the emi guys.
9. Do you really like Elton John???
The "goodbye yellow brick road" album
is good. Also "rocketman" and that song with K.D. Lang are excellent.
10. Have you managed to buy a better keyboard
or do you still love that sound from the keyboard you bought for £9?
Exactly... I didn't use the keyboard
because it was cheap, necessarily, but because it sounded more like a guitar
to me. I've actually been learning to play the guitar better for the next
record so hopefully I'll play that when we tour again.
11. Which band would you love to tour
with?
THE CRIBS.

12. Is Georgia going out with anyone now?
Do I have any possibility to go out with her? ;-)
She does have a good man at the moment.
They spent Christmas together, but he is going on holiday with his friends
soon so there is a small chance for you.
13. Can you name your favourite band from
each decade?
Best of the 50's: ELVIS PRESLEY
Best of the 60's: THE BEACH BOYS
Best of the 70's: CRAZY HORSE
Best of the 80's: ORANGE JUICE
Best of the 90's: PAVEMENT
14. Name a recent record you can't stop
listening to.
‘Tanglewood numbers’ from THE SILVER
JEWS.
15. Which are your plans for 2007? Any
other gigs in Spain? We really loved your gig at the Faraday Festival in
July 2006!!!
We will be recording a new record
- we're just negotiating with emi about the producer. We've got a
new bandmate, Johnny White, on the electric guitar, so we'll be touring
a lot to toughen him up. Hopefully we'll play the Faraday Festival
with The Horrors - I have been obsessed
with them ever since the last time. We raced
up a small tree and I was the winner.
