Steward Henderson (bass player) kindly answered our questionnaire...

1. Who do you hate?
Cliff Richard, George W Bush, cats.

2. Which things do you hate?
Hangovers, seafood, people who crack their knuckles.

3. Why 'hate' if what the album transmits is 'love'? what did you want to mean with 'hate' as the title of your last album?
We wanted an album title that would was short and to the point, a title that would create an impact.  Hate happens to be an emotion that we all feel but rarely sing about.

4. What about working with Dave Fridmann? Are you satisfied with his production? are you satisfied with the sound of 'hate'?
We have become very good friends with Dave over the years: he is an exceptionally gifted producer and gives our music an edge which I think it benefits from.  We're very pleased with how Hate sounds although it was a very difficult album to mix, much harder than The Great Eastern.

5. I saw a wonderful gig by The Delgados last year in Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona... some months later I saw another nice gig in Valencia at Wintercase Festival... and now we are going to see you live again at Benicassim Festival... do you like spanish festivals? which are the best memories you keep of them? what´s your opinion about Benicassim festival?
We always enjoy playing in Spain and have always been very well received whenever we've played there.  Spanish festivals, like most festivals, are very enjoyable and usually involve lots of drinking and (preferably) baking hot sunshine.  The Benicassim Festival in particular is notorious amongst Scottish bands as being a hugely enjoyable festival and one that we all want to play.  A large reason for this is of course the free bar for the whole weekend in the artists' compound - that and the swimming pool.  It must be said that alcohol and early morning swimming do not go well together as I nearly drowned when we played Benicassim in 1999.  I was absolutley fucking plastered and took top swimming lengths of the pool underwater before Alun jumped in and pulled me out.  Paul also collapsed in the pool one afternoon with a mixture of drunkeness and sunstroke - I believe he threw up on the bus going back to our hotel.  Another fond memory of Benicassim would be John from bis bursting his scrotum on the go-karts and having to get his balls stitched in a nearby first aid tent.  Nice.

6. Do you drink wine in all gigs or only when you go to countries which produce a good wine? do you like spanish wine? which one do you prefer? red wine? white wine? which is the best wine you have drunk?
We tend to drink enormous amounts of alcohol wherever we go and particularly good wine tends to be a bonus.  I like Spanish wine very much but then again, I like ALL wine very much and normally drink anything and everything. My favourite wine would be a dry red, maybe a Cabernet Sauvignon, but I'm
also getting into rose wine in a big way: I know this is not cool but who cares?  It tastes great really cold and always gets you pissed.

7. What do you think about these other bands from Glasgow?

-Teenage Fanclub Always loved them - a huge influence on me when I wasyounger.
-Belle and Sebastian I like some of their songs and they're very nice people.
-Mogwai Mogwai will always be a special band for me, we achieved an awful lot together when they were on Chemikal Underground.
-Mull Historical Society I like Colin McIntyre a lot although it's taken me a while to really get into their music.
-Camera Obscura Don't really know too much about them I'm afraid.
-Bis Like Mogwai, we owe a lot to bis for what they achieved so early in their careers.  We know Steven and John very well and I'm sure they'll continue to make great music.
-Astrid Absolute fucking mentalists.  They drink like no band I have ever met nor will ever meet.
-Salako Again, I dont know too much about them.
-The Reindeer Section Strange one because I know so many of them.  Not an enormous fan of their music but then again, maybe I'm just fucked off because they never asked any delgados to be in their gang.  I generally think that 'supergroups' are a shit idea.
-Travis Nice guys apparently, wish I knew them better so I could borrow some money from them.
-Snowpatrol Again, I know the guys and like them but to be truthful, I've struggled to get into their music...
-Idlewild Lovely guys and I'm happy for them that they've become so successful.  Bastards.

8. Which DELGADOS' album are you more proud of?
All of them, although I was over the moon when The Great Eastern did so well.  I really love Hate although I've been disappointed by how little it's connected with people.

9. Do you like football? If so, which football team do you support?
I love football and I support Motherwell although they're not doing too well at the moment.

10. A spanish friend that was living in glasgow for some time told me that she never saw you on the weekends? do you spend the 24 hours-a-day writing songs? what do you do in an ordinary day?
I work in the office every day if I'm not recording/rehearsing/performing with the delgados.  When I'm not working I like to be in the pub as much as possible.  I am also addicted to computer games.

11. Which bands are you listening to lately? Which bands and records would you recommend us?
New signings to Chemikal Underground - Sluts Of Trust, they are absolutley fucking tremendous.
